Hair, Heavy Metals & Minerals – What Your Hair is Telling Me

It’s not just for styling—your hair holds health secrets

Did you know your hair is like a little mineral archive? While blood tests tell us what’s happening in the moment, hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA) tells the story of what’s been going on in your body over the past 6–12 weeks.

It’s one of my favourite tools in clinic—because the results can explain fatigue, mood swings, stubborn weight, PMS, skin flares, and more. All from a tiny snip of hair.

What is Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis?

HTMA is a simple lab test that measures levels of essential minerals and toxic heavy metals in your hair. These minerals influence every major system in the body: hormones, energy production, mood regulation, detoxification, immune function—you name it.

While blood levels of minerals can fluctuate daily depending on diet, stress or hydration, hair gives us a longer-term window. It’s especially useful when symptoms don’t match the bloodwork—or when you feel “off,” but can’t figure out why.

What Can Show Up in a Hair Test?

Here's a sneak peek of what we often find:

Magnesium Deficiency
Magnesium is involved in 300+ biochemical reactions. Low levels can lead to anxiety, cramps, insomnia, irritability, and PMS.

Calcium Imbalance
Too high? It may point to underactive thyroid or adrenal fatigue. Too low? Your bones and teeth might not be getting the minerals they need.

Copper Overload / Zinc Deficiency
These two are a delicate pair. Copper toxicity is linked to estrogen dominance, mood swings, anxiety, and fatigue. Zinc is crucial for immunity, skin health, fertility, and healing.

Heavy Metals: Mercury, Lead, Aluminium
Even low-level exposure from fillings, cookware, or water can cause mood issues, memory problems, gut irritation, and hormonal imbalance.

Who Should Consider HTMA?

You may benefit from hair testing if you’ve experienced:

  • Chronic fatigue or brain fog

  • Unexplained anxiety or mood swings

  • Burnout or poor stress resilience

  • Thyroid issues that don’t respond to meds

  • Stubborn weight gain despite healthy eating

  • Skin issues like acne, eczema or psoriasis

  • Menstrual problems or hormonal acne

  • Multiple chemical sensitivities or a history of metal exposure

It’s also a great test for those who feel “off” but have had normal blood tests. I often use it alongside stool testing or hormone panels for a more holistic view.

What Happens After the Test?

Once we’ve got your results, I walk you through:

  1. What’s showing up — from mineral highs and lows to toxic metal overload

  2. How it relates to your symptoms — e.g., low zinc affecting your immune system

  3. A step-by-step plan — including targeted supplementation, lifestyle changes, and detox support tailored to your unique biochemistry

This isn’t about throwing a bunch of pills at the problem. It’s about restoring balance in your body so your energy, hormones, and brain can function optimally.

Is It Safe to Detox Heavy Metals?

Yes—but only when done safely and strategically. Some detox programs can be too aggressive and stir up more issues than they solve. In my clinic, we focus on:

  • Nourishing first (strengthening adrenals, minerals, gut lining)

  • Detoxing gently using binders, herbs, and nutritional support

  • Monitoring symptoms and progress to ensure you’re improving, not crashing

The goal is sustainable healing—not a one-week detox with a green juice and a prayer.

Let’s Decode What Your Hair Is Saying

Hair mineral analysis is one of the most eye-opening tools we use at Womankind Natural Health. It’s especially useful for women who are burnt out, hormonally out of whack, or stuck in a frustrating “everything looks fine on paper” loop.

If you’re ready to stop guessing and get some real answers, let’s work together.

Book your online consultation and we’ll explore whether HTMA is right for you.
