When Your Gut Function Isn’t Functioning Well

Digestive symptoms are often brushed off as “normal”—bloating after meals, irregular bowel movements, or ongoing discomfort. But in my clinical experience, these are signals from your body that something isn’t functioning optimally.

As a Naturopath and Women’s Health Educator at Womankind Natural Health, I frequently see women struggling with gut issues that impact not only digestion, but also hormones, energy, skin, and mood.

Your gut plays a central role in your overall health. When it’s supported properly, many seemingly unrelated symptoms begin to improve. My role is to help you identify what’s driving your digestive symptoms and create a personalised plan to restore balance.

Common Digestive Concerns I See in Practice

Digestive symptoms can present in many ways, including:

  • Bloating or abdominal distension

  • Constipation or diarrhoea

  • Irritable bowel symptoms (IBS)

  • Food sensitivities or intolerances

  • Reflux or indigestion

  • Excess gas or discomfort after eating

For some women, these symptoms are occasional. For others, they are persistent and impact daily life, confidence, and wellbeing.

Why Gut Health Matters Beyond Digestion

The gut is deeply connected to many systems in the body. When digestive health is compromised, it can contribute to:

  • Hormonal imbalances (including estrogen metabolism)

  • Skin issues such as acne or rosacea

  • Fatigue and low energy

  • Mood changes, anxiety, or brain fog

  • Immune dysfunction

This is why I take a whole-body approach—not just focusing on symptoms, but understanding how your gut is influencing your overall health.

Understanding the Root Causes

Rather than simply managing symptoms, I focus on identifying what’s driving your digestive issues. Common contributing factors include:

Imbalances in Gut Bacteria

An imbalance in the gut microbiome (often referred to as dysbiosis) can lead to bloating, irregular bowel movements, and inflammation.

Digestive Insufficiency

Low stomach acid or insufficient digestive enzymes can make it difficult to properly break down food, leading to discomfort and nutrient deficiencies.

Food Intolerances

Certain foods may trigger symptoms due to sensitivities or difficulty digesting specific components such as lactose or fermentable carbohydrates.

Stress and Nervous System Imbalance

The gut and brain are closely connected. Chronic stress can disrupt digestion, motility, and gut function.

Inflammation and Gut Lining Integrity

Irritation or inflammation of the gut lining can contribute to symptoms such as bloating, food sensitivities, and immune activation.
