Your period is talking, are you listening?

If you’ve ever been told that painful, heavy, irregular or missing periods are “just part of being a woman,” you’re not alone—and you’ve also been misled.

Your menstrual cycle is more than an inconvenience to tolerate or medicate away. In fact, it’s now considered by many health professionals (myself included!) to be a fifth vital sign—alongside temperature, blood pressure, respiratory rate and pulse.

Why? Because your cycle offers valuable insights into your overall health, particularly your hormonal, thyroid, adrenal and metabolic function.

Let’s explore why your period is such an important indicator—and what it may be trying to tell you.

What a Healthy Cycle Actually Looks Like

Before we dive into the red flags, let’s talk about what’s normal.

A healthy menstrual cycle should:

  • Last between 26–35 days

  • Include ovulation around the mid-point (which you shouldn’t feel as a painful event)

  • Bring a bleed that lasts 3–7 days

  • Not come with excessive clotting, flooding, pain, or mood swings

  • Feel like a natural rhythm, not a monthly disaster

If your cycle consistently ticks these boxes, chances are your hormones are in decent shape. But for many women, that’s not the case—and the symptoms that show up often point to something deeper going on.

5 Period Clues That Something’s Off

Your cycle can reflect imbalances in many body systems. Here are some of the most common clues I look for as a women’s health naturopath:

  1. Heavy, painful periods
Often linked to oestrogen dominance, poor liver clearance, or conditions like endometriosis.

  2. Light or missing periods
Could indicate low progesterone, stress-related HPA axis dysfunction, or even thyroid issues.

  3. Irregular or unpredictable cycles
May signal PCOS, blood sugar issues, or under-eating.

  4. PMS that disrupts your life
Crippling mood swings, breast tenderness, or anxiety before your period may point to hormonal imbalance—especially low progesterone or high oestrogen.

  5. Mid-cycle spotting or pain
A possible sign of hormone fluctuations, inflammation, or nutrient deficiencies.

Why Suppressing Period Symptoms Can Backfire

It’s common to be prescribed hormonal birth control to “regulate” your cycle. But here’s the thing:
The pill doesn’t regulate your hormones—it shuts them down.

While it might relieve symptoms temporarily, it masks the real issue. When you come off it, symptoms often return (sometimes worse than before), because the underlying imbalance hasn’t been addressed.

What I Look For as a Naturopath

When a client comes to me with period concerns, I dig deeper. We explore:

  • Functional pathology (not just basic bloods)

  • Thyroid, insulin, and adrenal markers

  • Nutrient status

  • Liver detox and gut health

  • Lifestyle and emotional stress load

This helps build a complete picture of what’s going on beneath the surface, so we can treat the root—not just the symptoms.

Your Next Steps: Start Listening to Your Cycle

If your period has been trying to tell you something, it’s time to listen.

Whether you're planning a pregnancy, coming off the pill, or just wanting to feel better in your body, paying attention to your menstrual cycle is a powerful first step toward hormonal balance.
