Vaginal Health 101: The Basics You Really Need to Know
Empower your inner goddess
Let’s break the silence about a topic that’s far too often left in whispered corners: vaginal health. I’m here as your friendly neighbourhood naturopath to talk openly (and with a dash of humour) about what it takes to keep your downstairs goddess thriving.
Your Vaginal Ecosystem: Not a Garden, But Close
The vagina is a self-cleaning, pH-balanced ecosystem full of trillions of beneficial bacteria—mainly Lactobacillus. These friendly flora keep things slightly acidic (around pH 3.8–4.5) to discourage the unwanted guests: yeast, BV, and UTIs.
When this delicate balance is disrupted—by antibiotics, sugar, stress, synthetic underwear, or even your body wash—you may find yourself... well, uncomfortable.
Signs Something’s Off:
Persistent itching or dryness
Unusual discharge (color or smell)
Burning or discomfort during urination
Painful sex (spoiler: that’s not normal)
If any of those ring a bell, your vagina might be waving a white flag.
What Can You Do?
Here’s what I recommend to clients in my online clinic:
Ditch the Fragrance – Scented soaps, wipes, and sprays disrupt your flora. Trust me—your vagina doesn’t want to smell like a cupcake.
Breathe Easy – Go for cotton underwear. Let your bits breathe.
Add Probiotics – Both oral and vaginal strains like L. reuteriand L. rhamnosus support a balanced microbiome.
Mind the Sugar – High sugar = happy yeast. Cut back where you can.
Manage Stress – Stress hormones suppress immune function. Deep breaths, magnesium baths, and boundaries help.
Post-Antibiotic TLC – If you’ve had antibiotics recently, replenish the good guys with a quality probiotic.
Ready to Get to the Root?
Recurring infections, mystery dryness, cycle changes—these aren’t just “one of those things.” They’re messages from your body.
If you’re ready for answers, support, and a judgement-free space, I’m here for you. Book your online consultation and let’s sort things out together.
